It’s very important to stay hydrated every day as our body uses water to carry out most body functions. Dehydration can cause headache, dizziness and can lead to various other illnesses due to reduced metabolism. Drinking a lot of water would keep your skin glowing and radiant. Increased water intake reduces appetite and for those looking to reduce body weight, it is advisable to drink water thirty minutes before every meal as it reduces the amount of calories consumed.
Sayo: Interesting fact, my final year project was kinda based on this.
Jomi: Cool story.
Sayo: Ok no lies, I am one of those people who just don’t enjoy water that much. I mean I can do with a glass now and then but I would rather reach for a soft drink or something with a lot of sugar, which poses to be a problem when I’m trying to be like my darling fit fam Jomi.
Jomi: I agree, she tends to fill the fridge with all sorts of sugary drinks and sometimes it can be tempting to reach for them.
Sayo: So because I am an awesome sister, I have decided to ditch (I would try) soft drinks and go for the healthier alternatives.
Jomi: If you don’t enjoy drinking water, these options would help you stay hydrated all day long.
Freshly juiced fruits are healthier alternatives to supermarket bought processed juice, this is because most of those drinks are high in sugar and have additives. Fruit juices can help satisfy your sugar cravings whilst helping you stay hydrated. You can juice almost every fruit, from watermelons to apples and the more popular oranges.
Fruit smoothies are an amazing way to stay hydrated. Each glass is packed with nutrients that you might miss with juicing your fruits. Smoothies can satisfy your sugar cravings and they also help you reduce your calorie intake.
Adding fruits into water can make it more enjoyable, refreshing and definitely more nutritious.
Drinking tea hot is healthier than drinking it cold because your body absorbs it better. However, in a country as hot as ours drinking tea every time is rather unpractical. Iced tea is a good alternative as it is refreshing and addition of fruits to the tea can increase antioxidants and vitamins.
Coconut water is high in potassium and contains other nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, and sodium. It is a great alternative to energy drinks after physical activities. Coconut water reduces blood pressure, it also moisturizes the skin and helps eliminate excess oil from the body. The health benefits of coconut water are endless and it is an amazing and tasty way to stay hydrated.
Coconut milk isn’t the same as coconut water, it is made by juicing the white meat from the coconut. It is highly nutritious and high in fibre, vitamins and minerals. Coconut milk can be consumed on its own or added to smoothies. Although coconut milk is high in all these nutrients, it is also high in calories.
ZOBO( HIBISCUS TEA)
Zobo is a rather refreshing drink, so it is great to know this drink has got tons of health benefits including reducing the risk of cancer. Adding ginger and other fruits whilst brewing this drink also increases the nutrients and flavor of the drink.
Soy milk is another nutritious way to stay healthy, and the most important benefit of soy milk is the presence of Isoflavones which help reduce cholesterol, and like Zobo they help in reducing the risk of both prostrate and breast cancer.
Sayo: That’s it guys, 8 healthy ways for you to stay hydrated.
Jomi: Sayo, now you have no excuse
Sayo: I’ll try.
